We have found that one of the best ways to improve reading skills and interest in reading is by frequent and consistent practice both here at school, and at home on a daily basis. We encourage students to set aside a specific time each day for reading if they have not already done so. This time may be a read-a-loud time with a parent or a quiet independent reading time (at school we call this independent daily reading).
Homework each night will include at least a 20-30 minute independent reading block and a reading log. (See in Homework Folder) The reading log has spaces for time spent reading and a parent signature and/or initials. We will appreciate your help with this assignment throughout the year. Students may read a “just right book” that they bring home from their reading bin or one at home. In the beginning many children will read two or three shorter picture books, but as the year progresses, the log usually reflects several days spent on one longer chapter book. If for some reason the reading log does not come home with your child, please write a note so that we may complete the log here at school the next day. Thank you in advance for your participation in this project. It will be well worth our efforts!
Please note: Dreambox is also an excellent resource for those children that want to do more math.
